Worker revolt forces company to abandon vegan initiative
【Summary】Volkswagen has reversed its vegan policies in response to worker backlash in Germany. The car manufacturer had stopped selling meat dishes in its office building but faced criticism, especially for banning its popular currywurst sausage. The company has reintroduced one rotating meat dish into the menu, including the currywurst on some days. The move is seen as a compromise between the demands for sustainability and employee preferences.
Worker backlash in Germany has led to Volkswagen, a major car manufacturer, reversing its vegan policies. In 2021, the corporation had stopped selling meat dishes, including its popular currywurst sausage, in its office building in Wolfsburg. Instead, they offered vegan, vegetarian, and fish options. However, due to employee demand, the company has reintroduced meat dishes alongside the vegan and vegetarian options since August 7.
The initial ban on meat was implemented by Volkswagen in response to employee calls for sustainability. However, it faced significant criticism and backlash within Germany. Politicians also joined the debate, criticizing the company's decision. The ban's impact on the sale of Volkswagen's currywurst, a beloved sausage produced at the Wolfsburg plant since 1973, caused much controversy.
The currywurst, listed as VW part 199 398 500 A, has gained immense popularity and is available at various supermarkets across the country. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder referred to the currywurst with fries as a favorite among skilled production workers. He criticized the ban, stating that while he occasionally eats vegetarian himself, the idea of not having currywurst was a step too far.
Volkswagen clarified that the reversal of the vegan policy does not mean a complete abandonment of their pro-vegan agenda. They have reintroduced one rotating meat dish alongside the vegan-dominated menu. This means that the famous currywurst will only be available in the canteen on certain days, with alternative meat dishes offered on other days.
