Zero DSR-X: Unleashing the Magic Carpet Ride

Highway 142 in Washington offers breathtaking views of dramatic basalt cliffs, the roiling rapids of the Klickitat River, and Mount Hood in the distance. However, my attention is focused on the display of my electric motorcycle, showing that I have 63 miles of range, and Google Maps, which indicates that I have 80 miles to the next charger. The question of how far I can coast weighs on my mind as I navigate this beautiful road.

The Zero DSR-X, an electric adventure motorcycle, challenges the notion of EVs as "adventure" vehicles. As I borrowed the DSR-X to answer this question, I realized that a better question to ask is: What does adventure mean to each individual?

Zero is not the only company aiming to take EVs beyond city limits. Rivian offers an electric pickup truck with a slide-out camp kitchen, Polaris has an electric side-by-side vehicle for off-roading, and Mercury sells an electric outboard boat motor. These vehicles are not meant for commuting but rather for exploring and having fun.

I felt well-prepared to test the DSR-X, as I own other adventure vehicles and have experience with power stations and boat batteries. The DSR-X has an angular and powerful design that exudes capability, and it lives up to its appearance. Riding in sport mode unleashes 100 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque, providing an exhilarating experience akin to an amusement park ride. The absence of gears intensifies the thrill, and the Bosch Advanced Stability Control System ensures a smooth and controlled ride.

One aspect that cannot be measured by numbers is the sheer smoothness of the DSR-X. Unlike traditional motorcycles, which are known for their vibrations, the DSR-X glides effortlessly thanks to its electric motor, belt drive, and high-quality suspension system. Standing on the pegs enhances this sensation, making it feel like riding a magic carpet.

However, the DSR-X's range presents a challenge. Despite Zero advertising a city range of 180 miles, real-world conditions and higher speeds quickly deplete the battery. Charging the bike is also time-consuming, with a level two charger taking around two-and-a-half hours to fully charge the 17.3kWh battery.

Undeterred by these limitations, I embarked on a trip to Klickitat County, Washington, a perfect test for the DSR-X. The bike's display showed a rapid decrease in range, and I realized that I would need to charge in Hood River, Oregon, to continue my journey. The mental math of balancing speed and charging time added an element of strategy to the trip.

Arriving in Hood River with a low battery, I connected the DSR-X to a level two charger. It was during this stop that I encountered a construction worker who was curious about the bike. Explaining its features and range, I realized the limitations of the DSR-X in comparison to more conventional vehicles.

Continuing my journey, I pushed the bike to its limits, carefully conserving energy and enjoying the scenery. Despite the challenges, I arrived at my destination with enough battery to make it back to the nearest charger. The experience felt like a true adventure, with unexpected encounters and the need to explore new destinations for charging.

Ultimately, adventure on an electric motorcycle may not involve conquering remote glaciers or crossing treacherous terrains. Instead, it is about embracing the inconveniences and limitations of riding on two wheels and finding joy in the clean, quiet, and smooth experience. The DSR-X may not be the most practical choice for long-distance travel, but for those who seek a different kind of adventure, it can lead to unexpectedly fun roads.
