Zero DSR-X: Unleashing the Magic Carpet Ride
【Summary】The Zero DSR-X is an electric adventure motorcycle that offers a thrilling ride but has limited range and slow charging capabilities. While it excels in terms of power and performance, with 100 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque, its battery life diminishes quickly at highway speeds. The DSR-X's range of 180 miles in the city is optimistic, and it takes about two-and-a-half hours to charge from empty on a level two charger.
Highway 142 in Washington offers stunning views of dramatic basalt cliffs and the Klickitat River. However, my attention is focused on the display of my electric motorcycle, showing my remaining range, and Google Maps, indicating the distance to the next charger. Can I make it?
The Zero DSR-X is an electric adventure motorcycle that challenges the notion of EVs as "adventure" vehicles. It raises the question of what adventure means to each individual. Other companies, such as Rivian, Polaris, and Mercury, are also pushing the boundaries of EVs in outdoor settings.
The DSR-X's design is aggressive and capable, with impressive power and torque. Riding in sport mode feels like being on an amusement park ride. The electric motor provides a smooth and exhilarating experience, without the vibrations typically associated with motorcycles.
However, the DSR-X's range is a challenge. While Zero advertises a city range of 180 miles, real-world conditions can significantly reduce that number. Charging the battery is also time-consuming, with a level two charger taking around two-and-a-half hours to fill the 17.3kWh battery.
I decided to test the DSR-X on a round trip to Klickitat County, Washington. The battery drained faster than expected, and I had to make strategic decisions about speed and charging to reach my destination on time. Despite the challenges, I managed to make it back with a sense of accomplishment.
Adventure on an electric motorcycle may not be about conquering extreme terrains, but rather embracing the limitations and finding joy in exploring new places and interacting with curious strangers. While the DSR-X may not be the most convenient option, it offers a clean, quiet, and thrilling ride.
In the end, if your goal is to travel as far and fast as possible across any terrain, the DSR-X may not be the best choice. However, if you define adventure as experiencing something different and being willing to face challenges, the DSR-X can lead you down unexpectedly fun roads, even if they all eventually lead to chargers.
