Winter Reminder for Tesla Owners: WD-40 Essential

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】Winter weather can pose challenges for Tesla owners, including frozen charge ports and door handles. Tesla has implemented features to help with these issues, such as an inlet heater and defrosting functions. However, door handles can still freeze, and Tesla recommends using WD-40 or silicone spray to prevent this. Some owners prefer silicone spray over WD-40 due to concerns about smell and removing existing lubricants.

Winter Reminder for Tesla Owners: WD-40 Essential

We already know that winter can pose challenges for battery-electric vehicles (EVs). Lower temperatures can affect the performance of the high-voltage battery, resulting in reduced range. Additionally, snow, ice, and freezing rain can make it difficult to open the doors of a Tesla. However, the manufacturer has come up with a solution, and seasoned owners have their own ideas as well.

One of the advantages of EVs is the ability to receive over-the-air (OTA) upgrades. Tesla, in particular, recognized the importance of software in their vehicles early on, using it to enhance the customer experience. Along with games and entertainment options, Tesla implemented features to help owners in unfavorable weather conditions. For example, the "Defrost Car" function can thaw a frozen charge port latch, while also melting snow and ice on the windshield, windows, and mirrors. Newer Teslas can even adjust the position of the windows to prevent difficulties in opening the frameless doors during cold weather.

However, Tesla did not implement a similar feature for the door handles. Due to their aerodynamic design, the door handles sit flush with the door, requiring the driver and passengers to push the wide part of the handle with their thumbs to access the slimmer part. This design can allow moisture or water droplets to get around the handle, leading to freezing in low temperatures or at high speeds. Tesla recommends applying WD-40 to the door handle as a solution, but some owners have reservations about its effectiveness and potential side effects.

For owners living in areas with persistent and changing winter weather, silicone spray is recommended as an alternative to WD-40. Before applying the frost-resistant and water-repelling product, it is important to clean the surface and allow it to dry. Tesla advises against using force when the door handle is frozen and suggests pressing the slimmer part of the handle multiple times to remove any ice buildup before attempting to open the door normally.

Whether you already own a Tesla or are considering buying one, it's essential to be aware of these recommendations and precautions to ensure a smooth experience, even in winter conditions.
