2023 Mercedes-AMG GT: Monterey Car Week unveils sleek 2+2 sports car
【Summary】Mercedes has unveiled the new 2023 AMG GT, a 2+2 sports car, at Monterey Car Week. The design includes active airflow elements, a rear spoiler, and a fixed wing made from plastic or carbon fiber. The car shares a platform with the AMG-developed SL and features a longer wheelbase, rear seats, and a large boot. It will be available in two versions with twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and four-wheel drive.
The second-generation Mercedes AMG GT is set to be a closer rival to the iconic Porsche 911. The design incorporates various aero tricks, including active airflow elements at the front and a rear spoiler that deploys at higher speeds. In addition, Mercedes will offer a fixed wing made from plastic or carbon fibre.
The overall look of the AMG GT is an evolution of the original model, with a longer-looking wheelbase and a front-end design in line with Mercedes' current styling direction. The rear features a gently sloping roofline, providing ample rear headroom and a surprisingly large boot with a capacity of 321 litres, increasing to a maximum of 675 litres. The most aggressive angle of the car is from the rear three-quarter view, showcasing its muscular rear wheelarches.
Sharing its platform with the AMG-developed SL, the new AMG GT is now a 2+2 with small rear seats, similar to most 911 variants. Mercedes hopes this additional practicality will sway customers away from Porsche's offerings.
The AMG GT comes with a choice of twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, each paired with a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive. The first model to be launched is the AMG GT 63 4MATIC+, boasting 577bhp and 800Nm of torque, enabling a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds. Following this is the AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ with 469bhp and 700Nm, completing the benchmark sprint in 3.9 seconds. The top speeds for these models are 195mph and 183mph, respectively.
The AMG GT is equipped with advanced chassis technology, including rear-axle steering, adaptive dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a semi-active hydraulics-based anti-roll bar system. It also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.8-inch portrait-layout touchscreen infotainment system. Personalization options include AMG Performance seats and carbon-ceramic brakes.
Mercedes has yet to release final specifications and pricing details. However, with the brand's push upmarket and the new seating layout, a significant increase in price is expected, potentially starting at £125,000.
Unlike the previous model, there will not be a Roadster version of the AMG GT this time. The SL will fill that role. However, Mercedes is likely to produce a GT3 racing variant and higher-performance roadgoing versions, some of which may feature hybrid technology to surpass 700bhp in overall power.
