2023 Range Rover Sport SE - Key Takeaways

The new-for-2023 Range Rover Sport plays a similar role in the Range Rover lineup as before. It is slightly smaller than the full-fat Range Rover, offers a toned-down design, comes at a more affordable price, and has a sporty appearance. However, it is important to note that the Sport is not a corner-carving track-capable SUV. For that, we will have to wait for the 2024 Range Rover Sport SV with its 626 horsepower and more aggressive suspension and brake package.

Instead, the focus of this Range Rover is on-road refinement and occasional off-road adventures. I had the opportunity to drive the base SE trim equipped with the 3.0-liter inline-six engine. With a price of $90,245 after options, it is more than $18,000 cheaper than the base Range Rover P400. But does it provide a true Range Rover experience?

Here are six thoughts on the Range Rover Sport SE:

1. The interior is truly gorgeous. The Range Rover Sport excels in minimalism and discrete luxury. The cabin features slab-sided paneling, artful control design, and a simple dashboard layout. It provides a calming atmosphere from the moment you step inside. The floating touchscreen is instantly accessible and serves as your control panel. The interior lacks overwhelming flourishes or ostentatious displays of wealth. Instead, it focuses on rich materials, such as supple leather, and a classy and timeless design.

2. There is no need for the V8 engine. The 3.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-six engine is making its way across the JLR lineups. In this application, it offers 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. While the V8 engine is available as an option, the inline-six's sweet and tuneful note is enough to overlook it. The engine provides ample power to outperform others from a stoplight, and its eight-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth and quick shifts. Additionally, the inline-six engine is the base option for the Range Rover Sport, making it an attractive choice in terms of price and performance. It also offers better fuel economy compared to the V8 engine.

3. Infotainment is no longer a glaring weakness. Land Rover has addressed the long-standing issue of subpar infotainment systems with the introduction of Pivi Pro. Paired with the Range Rover Sport's beautiful screen hardware, including a 13.1-inch central screen and 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster, the infotainment system is a delight to use. It seamlessly integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing for easy switching between smartphone display and native infotainment. Land Rover has significantly improved its tech game, now offering a competitive system that rivals the best in the class.

4. It may not be as sporty to drive as the name suggests. Despite its name, the Range Rover Sport's chassis does not offer the thrilling driving experience that enthusiasts may desire. The "dynamic" air suspension, which is standard on every Range Rover Sport, provides a comfortable ride by preparing the adaptive dampers for bumps ahead. However, the handling leaves much to be desired. The steering is slow, there is noticeable body roll, and the vehicle does not encourage aggressive driving. Land Rover does offer performance options, such as rear-wheel steering and a 48-volt electronic active roll system, which can enhance the sportiness of the vehicle.

5. The design is a marvel that combines tradition and modernity. The Range Rover Sport's design is captivating, with its seamless body, flush door handles, and beautiful taillights. It embodies the concept of "clean design" and maintains the timeless SUV character while incorporating modern elements. The Sport's design is a splendid evolution of the traditional SUV shape and the sleek aesthetic that has become synonymous with the model.

6. Off-road capabilities are still present. While I primarily drove the Range Rover Sport on pavement, the vehicle offers various off-road technologies for those seeking adventure. The air suspension can be raised for greater ground clearance, and the Range Rover's all-wheel drive system is standard. Additionally, there are features such as wade-sensing software, off-road cameras, an electronic active differential, and the latest "Terrain Response" system from Land Rover. These systems automatically adjust vehicle settings based on the terrain, ensuring optimal performance. The Range Rover Sport also offers low-speed off-road cruise control, allowing for precise control during off-road excursions.

Overall, the new Range Rover Sport excels as an on-road luxury vehicle. It may not offer the dynamic performance of some competitors, but it compensates with its stylish design, luxurious interior, and off-road capabilities. If you prioritize panache, timeless luxury, and occasional off-road adventures, the Range Rover Sport is an excellent choice.
