2024 BMW M2 Breaks Nurburgring Compact Car Record

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】The 2024 BMW M2 has set a compact car record at Nürburgring, beating the Audi RS3 and the previous M2. The lap time of 7:38.706 is impressive, although not an all-out track record. BMW used parts that normal customers can buy, unlike Audi's fully caged and modified vehicle. While the new M2 is not as lightweight as the previous generation, its six-cylinder engine with 453 horsepower and optional stick make it a compelling option, especially with its cheaper price compared to the M4.

2024 BMW M2 Breaks Nurburgring Compact Car Record

The new BMW M2 has proven to be a fast car around the track, setting a record at the Nürburgring in the compact class segment. It beat competitors like the Audi RS3 and the previous M2 with an impressive time of 7:38.706. While it may not be an all-out track record, it is still a remarkable achievement.

BMW shared a video of the complete lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the classic road course. The M2's time puts it ahead of its rivals and even surpasses the old M2's time. The previous M2 Competition model recorded a time of 7:52.36. However, BMW still has some catching up to do as the Audi RS3 in the same class ran a time of 7:40.748, only two seconds faster.

What sets BMW's record apart is that the M2 used for the record was equipped with parts that are available for purchase by regular customers. In contrast, the Audi used for its record run had modifications such as a full cage, rear seat delete, and racing buckets. While Audi could potentially come back with a special-edition RS3 to beat BMW's time, it would involve significant expenses in a somewhat meaningless competition.

Although the new M2 has an impressive record, it differs from the first-generation car. The current "compact" 2 Series is more like a shortened 4 Series, weighing close to 4,000 pounds as a result. However, it compensates with its powerful six-cylinder engine producing 453 horsepower and the option for a manual transmission. Despite its differences, the M2 is still a worthwhile purchase, especially considering its price tag, which is around $15,000 cheaper than an M4.
