2024 BMW M2 Breaks Nurburgring Compact Car Record

The new BMW M2 has proven itself to be a fast contender on the track, setting a record around the Nürburgring in the compact class segment. With a time of 7:38.706, it outperformed rivals such as the Audi RS3 and the previous generation M2. While it may not be an all-out track record, it is still an impressive feat.

BMW shared a video of the complete lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, showcasing the car's capabilities on the classic road course. Its time not only surpasses its competitors but also exceeds the previous record set by the old M2. The M2 Competition, specifically, achieved a time of 7:52.36. However, the gap between BMW and Audi's record is not as significant. In 2021, an RS3 in the same class achieved a time of 7:40.748, making it a close competition.

What sets BMW's record apart is that the M2 used for the record was equipped with parts that are available for purchase by regular BMW customers. In contrast, the Audi RS3 that held the previous record was heavily modified with features such as a fully caged interior and racing buckets. There is still a possibility that Audi could release a special edition RS3 to reclaim the title, but it would involve significant investment.

Although the new M2's record is impressive, it differs from the first-generation model. The current "compact" 2 Series is more similar to a shortened 4 Series and weighs close to 4,000 pounds as a result. However, it compensates with its powerful six-cylinder engine producing 453 horsepower and the option for a manual transmission. Despite not being the ultimate last hurrah, the M2 is still a worthwhile purchase, especially considering its price point, which is approximately $15,000 lower than that of an M4.
