2024 Ford Puma EV: Impressive Range and Affordable Price
【Summary】Ford is planning to phase out all combustion-engined vehicles in Europe by 2030 and the Puma subcompact crossover will play a crucial role in this transition. A zero-emission version of the Puma is expected to be released in 2024 with a starting price of €36,000 and a driving range of around 400 kilometers. The Puma EV will be based on the Global B-car vehicle architecture and will be produced alongside the combustion-engined versions.
Ford of Europe is facing challenges in terms of market share and profitability. However, the automaker is determined to transition to an EV-only lineup in the European Union and the United Kingdom by the end of the decade. To achieve this, the Puma subcompact crossover, manufactured in Romania, plays a vital role.
The Puma, introduced in 2019, takes its name from a small coupe produced between 1997 and 2002. Designed by a team led by Thomas Morel, this B-segment crossover is indirectly replacing the Fiesta in Ford's European lineup. It offers a range of 1.0- and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines and is exclusively front-wheel drive. Ford plans to introduce an electric version of the Puma in 2024.
According to Auto Bild, a prominent German motoring publication, the Puma EV is expected to have a starting price of 36,000 euros, which is equivalent to $39,300. While this may seem expensive, it is comparable to other B-segment crossovers like Peugeot's e-2008 and significantly cheaper than the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense.
The Puma EV is estimated to have a driving range of approximately 400 kilometers according to the WLTP combined test cycle, making it a competitive option in its segment. Production of the Puma EV will occur alongside the combustion-engined versions of the Puma.
Ford has adapted the Global B-car vehicle architecture for the Puma EV instead of developing a new platform. This platform is also used by the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier, small vans available with various engine options, including an electric drive unit.
The E-Tourneo Courier, a five-seater van with an electric drive unit, was launched in May 2023, and the Puma EV is expected to follow suit by 2024. Both vans are likely to feature one-pedal driving mode. However, Ford has not yet confirmed the battery capacity and WLTP combined range for either van.
