2024 Subaru Outback: A Wagon Worth Considering

The 2024 Subaru Outback is a versatile and capable SUV alternative that offers ample space, cargo-carrying versatility, and standard all-wheel drive. It outperforms many similarly priced crossover SUVs in terms of space, versatility, and ground clearance. The Outback is a popular choice for outdoor adventurers, especially in regions like the Pacific Northwest, New England, Colorado, and Alaska. The Outback Wilderness version offers even more ruggedness for those seeking extra capability.

However, the Outback may not be suitable for everyone. The base engine's acceleration is lackluster, and the steering feels imprecise. The Outback's technology features are not its strong suit, and its aesthetics lean towards the less attractive end of the spectrum. Despite these drawbacks, we believe anyone considering comparably priced SUVs should at least consider the Outback as a viable option.

In terms of updates for 2024, the Outback Wilderness receives a new front fascia design that enhances its rugged appearance. Other Outback models carry over the same design as the previous year, which featured a comprehensive styling refresh. Some equipment updates have been made, including the addition of a heated steering wheel to the Onyx Editions and Wilderness trims, as well as a sunroof and reverse automatic braking to the base engine Onyx Edition.

The Outback's interior features a vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen, which is easy to reach and use. However, compared to other brands' vehicles, the touchscreen may appear rudimentary in both appearance and operation. The interior design may not be particularly attractive, but the materials quality has improved. Even the base trim comes with simulated leather accents on the dash, doors, and center console. The Onyx Edition, Wilderness, and Touring trims offer unique upholstery options with color accents.

The Outback offers impressive passenger and cargo space, surpassing many compact crossovers in size. It is especially accommodating for parents with rear-facing child seats. The cargo volume is exceptional, relying on its generous width and depth rather than height. The Outback's unique roof rails can swing inward to become their own crossbars, providing additional versatility for carrying items on the roof.

The Outback offers two engine options. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 182 horsepower and delivers excellent fuel economy. The optional turbocharged 2.4-liter engine generates 260 horsepower and provides a more compelling performance. The Outback's steering may feel numb on center, but it is well-suited for off-road surfaces. The Wilderness trim, with its all-terrain tires, offers increased capability off-road but compromises on-road handling.

Pricing for the 2024 Outback starts at $30,190 for the base trim and goes up to $44,090 for the Touring XT trim. Every Outback model comes with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. The Outback has received top safety ratings from both government crash tests and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
