2024 Vauxhall Crossland replacement brings back Frontera name

The ageing Vauxhall Crossland is set to be replaced by an all-new small SUV in the not-too-distant future. Our spy photographers have caught the car testing once again, providing us with a good idea of how the new model might look.

The new small SUV will be available with a choice of petrol or electric power, and there are rumors that it could revive the Vauxhall Frontera name. Vauxhall is undergoing a design revolution, with the Astra becoming one of the better-looking hatchbacks on sale and the Mokka transforming into a style-led SUV. The new small crossover, set to be released in 2024, will offer more space and utility for practicality-focused buyers.

The latest spy pictures show that the new Frontera will have a boxier and more conventional SUV shape compared to the old Crossland. It will feature a bluff front end, the Vauxhall 'Vizor' grille, a tall roofline, and a flatter rear. This positioning shift will make the Crossland replacement a rival for family cars from Dacia and the Citroen C3 Aircross, with a chunkier and more robust design.

Despite its relatively compact footprint, the new Crossland replacement will offer a good level of luggage room and interior space. There is even a possibility that it could be offered with three rows of seats for maximum usability. The car has been spotted testing at higher speeds, revealing a more upright stance that produces considerable body lean. However, the suspension and damping are still under development.

The Crossland replacement is expected to use the same CMP platform found in other Stellantis SUVs. This platform will allow for pure-petrol, mild-hybrid petrol, and full EV powertrain options. The petrol engine will likely be Vauxhall's 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo, available in different outputs. There may also be a 48-volt mild-hybrid option and a fully electric version of the car, as Vauxhall aims to offer a fully electric lineup by 2024.

The CMP platform has recently been upgraded, adding a bigger battery and a more powerful motor. This technology will likely be available in the new small SUV, providing additional range and more budget-focused EV options. The car will also feature Vauxhall's Pure Panel infotainment set-up, with digital dash and infotainment screens available in different sizes depending on the trim level.

Given the expected focus on value for money, the replacement for the Crossland could be priced from less than £25,000, with the all-electric model starting from around £36,000. The new small SUV is set to be revealed in the first half of 2024.

Overall, the Vauxhall Crossland replacement aims to offer a stylish and practical small SUV option, with a range of powertrain choices to suit different preferences and needs.
