Nissan's Exclusive EV Strategy for Europe

Nissan has made a significant announcement regarding its plans for electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe. The company stated that it will exclusively launch fully electric vehicles in the region from now on, with the aim of selling only EVs by 2030.

Makoto Uchida, Nissan's President and CEO, emphasized the importance of EVs in achieving carbon neutrality and stated that the switch to full electric by 2030 is aligned with the company's Ambition 2030 vision. Uchida also highlighted the positive response from customers who have already experienced the benefits of Nissan electric vehicles.

While Nissan confirmed the production of two new battery-electric vehicles for Europe, specific details about the successor to the Leaf EV were not provided. However, it was previously announced that the Leaf successor would be an electric SUV produced at the Sunderland plant in the UK, starting from 2026.

The Nissan Chill-Out study, introduced in November 2021, offered a preview of the upcoming electric SUV. This "near-future EV" showcased the CMF-EV platform and featured the e-4ORCE dual-motor AWD powertrain from the Ariya.

In addition to the electric SUV, Nissan will introduce a new electric car that will serve as the successor to the Nissan Micra. This entry-level vehicle will be manufactured by Renault in Douai, France, alongside the full-electric Renault 5.

Recently, Nissan unveiled the Concept 20-23 in London, describing it as a sporty urban electric car. However, it was clarified that the concept was an exterior model only. Based on its design and the upcoming Micra EV, the Concept 20-23 appears to explore a three-door version of the vehicle.

Nissan has set ambitious targets for EVs, aiming to launch 19 new battery-electric models by 2030. The company also plans for 98 percent of its sales in Europe to be electrified – a combination of fully electric cars and hybrids – by the fiscal year ending in March 2027.

Furthermore, Nissan announced its plans to reduce the cost of EV batteries by 65 percent through the introduction of cobalt-free technology by fiscal year 2028. The company also aims to launch EVs with its proprietary all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) by the same fiscal year.

By committing to going fully electric in Europe by 2030, Nissan aligns itself with its alliance partner, Renault, which also plans to make its core brand all-electric by that time.
