Algeria removes 'Barbie' from theaters

Algeria has joined a growing number of Arab countries in withdrawing the film "Barbie" from cinemas. The film, which has made over $1.2 billion in worldwide revenues, was released in Algeria on July 19. However, cinemas removed it from their schedules on Sunday without any explanation.

The film's distributor in Algeria also announced its removal without providing a reason. According to online news site 24H Algerie, the film was taken down for "violating morals". The site cited well-informed sources and reported that Algeria has become embroiled in controversy over Barbie due to scenes intended for adult audiences and allusions to homosexuality.

TSA, another news site, reported that the film was discreetly withdrawn from cinemas. Despite being highly anticipated by LGBTQ communities worldwide, the film does not contain any explicit references to same-sex relationships or queer themes.

Algeria's culture ministry, which is responsible for announcing film bans and providing reasons, has not made any statement regarding the withdrawal of Barbie. This decision to halt screenings of the film in Algeria follows similar moves in the region.

Just last week, Kuwait also barred the film due to concerns about "public ethics", according to officials.
