Amazon Expands Rivian Electric Vehicle Fleet

Amazon has reached a new milestone with its Rivian-built Electric Delivery Vehicle (EDV) fleet. The company now has over 10,000 EDVs on the road, which is double the size compared to four months ago. This indicates that production of the EDV at Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois, has increased in recent months. In July 2023, Amazon announced that it had reached the previous milestone of 5,000 EDVs on US roads. It took a year for Amazon to receive the first 5,000 Rivian EDVs, from July 2022 to July 2023.

Rivian does not provide a breakdown of vehicle production by model. However, in the third quarter of 2023, the company manufactured a record 16,304 battery-electric vehicles, including the R1S, R1T, and EDV models, at its Illinois factory.

With the delivery of 10,000 EDVs, Amazon has added 10 percent of the 100,000 Rivian vans it pledged to purchase in 2019 and put on the road by 2030. It is worth noting that Rivian missed its initial target of delivering the first 10,000 electric vans to Amazon by 2022.

Amazon has expressed its commitment to continue driving the fastest rollout of an electric delivery fleet in the United States. At its Delivering the Future event on October 17, the company shared interesting statistics about the Rivian EDV. Since July 2022, when the vans hit the road, Amazon's electric delivery vans have delivered over 260 million packages to customers in more than 1,800 cities across the US.

Rivian EDVs are currently delivering packages in various cities, including Alpharetta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Grand Rapids, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Madison, Miami, Nashville, New York, Newark, Oakland, Omaha, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Provo, Rochester, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa, and Toledo. Additionally, the company is introducing vans in Anaheim, Green Bay, Lexington, and Silver Spring.

As the fleet continues to grow rapidly, Amazon is also investing in upgrading its charging infrastructure. The company has already installed over 12,000 chargers in more than 100 delivery stations.

It is worth noting that Amazon is not only electrifying its delivery fleet in the United States but also globally. In Germany, for example, the company started adding Rivian EDV 500 vans to its fleet in July 2023. By 2030, Amazon estimates that its fleet of 100,000 electric vans will save millions of metric tons of carbon per year.
