Suzuki plans to export Indian EVs to Japan by 2025

Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation is set to begin production of electric vehicles (EVs) in India and export them to Japan by 2025, according to the Nikkei newspaper. This move is part of Suzuki's plan to establish India as its global electric car manufacturing hub. Additionally, Suzuki is considering supplying India-made EVs to its partner Toyota Motor for the European market under the Toyota brand.

Suzuki will reportedly set up a new production line at a plant in Gujarat, India, operated by its subsidiary Maruti Suzuki. The production line is expected to start manufacturing next autumn and will have a capacity of 250,000 units per year. In addition to electric vehicles, the line will also produce gasoline-powered cars.

The battery-powered cars that Suzuki plans to export to Japan will be small sports utility vehicles with a price range of approximately 3 million yen ($20,043) to 4 million yen. This move aligns with Suzuki's strategy to focus on compact cars and EVs in the Japanese market.

Neither Suzuki nor Toyota have commented on the report. Toyota currently holds a 4.9% stake in Suzuki.

Overall, Suzuki's decision to produce EVs in India and export them to Japan demonstrates the company's commitment to the global electric car market and its efforts to leverage India's manufacturing capabilities.
