Australian EV fleet charging project
【Summary】Australia's largest electric vehicle (EV) fleet charging project has been announced, with $12m in funding from ARENA. JET Charge will install and maintain EV chargers for fleet operators, who will pay via a subscription fee. Over 3,000 new EVs will be put on the road during the project's three-year run. The initiative aims to encourage fleet owners to switch to EVs and decarbonize the transport sector. Greenpeace has praised the project as a step in the right direction.
Australia has announced its biggest-ever electric vehicle fleet charging project, receiving $12 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). The project, called the Charging as a Service Project, is being launched by JET Charge, an EV charging company based in Melbourne. It aims to encourage fleet operators to switch to electric vehicles by offering a new way to pay for EV charging infrastructure. JET Charge will install and maintain EV chargers at the customer's site, with fleet operators paying for the service through a subscription fee.
Over the course of the three-year project, more than 3,000 new electric vehicles will be put on the road. This initiative aligns with the federal government's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and their efforts to decarbonize the transport sector. Fleet owners, who account for about half of new vehicle sales in Australia, face challenges in adopting EVs due to high upfront costs and the complexities of installing and maintaining charging infrastructure. JET Charge's subscription service aims to lower these barriers and provide more affordable charging options to customers.
Darren Miller, CEO of ARENA, believes that this project will encourage more fleet owners to make the switch to electric vehicles. He highlights the importance of accessible charging infrastructure in enabling fleet users to transition to EVs. Miller also expresses his excitement about JET Charge's innovative approach, as it has the potential to pave the way for similar services across Australia. Greenpeace has welcomed the fleet charging project, considering it a significant step in the right direction. Violette Snow, Greenpeace Australia Pacific's spokesperson, urges big businesses to commit to 100% electric cars and trucks, emphasizing the positive impact on the business case for electric fleets and the transition to cleaner streets.
This ambitious project not only contributes to the growth of the electric vehicle market but also has broader implications for the Australian transport sector. As fleets account for a substantial portion of new car sales and have a relatively short lifespan, businesses committing to electric vehicles will accelerate the availability of second-hand EVs for everyday Australians. This will facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles by a wider audience and contribute to the country's efforts in achieving a sustainable and healthier future.
