Ben Wallace's Resignation as Defence Secretary

Hours after Ben Wallace stepped down from his role as Defence Secretary, it was announced that former Energy Secretary Grant Shapps would be taking over the position. This marks Shapps' fifth cabinet role within a year.

Prior to his resignation, Wallace had served under three prime ministers over the course of four years. He had also played a significant role in the UK's response to the Ukraine invasion.

Wallace's resignation adds to a growing list of resignations among Conservative Party politicians. But what are the reasons behind his decision and what implications does it have for the party?

In his resignation letter, Wallace stated that he had previously made it known that he would step down during the next cabinet reshuffle. He also mentioned that he would be stepping down as a Member of Parliament in the upcoming election.

According to Wallace, his decision to resign comes after much reflection and a desire to focus on aspects of his life that he had previously neglected. He expressed his intention to explore new opportunities and invest in other areas.

In the same letter, Wallace urged his successor and the government to continue prioritizing defence spending. He emphasized the importance of not reverting to a time when defence was considered discretionary and cost-cutting measures compromised its effectiveness.

Ben Wallace had been serving as Defence Secretary for four years, but he had a long political career before that. He started as a British Army officer and later became a Member of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. In 2005, he was elected to the Westminister Parliament as the representative for Lancaster and Wyre.

Under Boris Johnson's government, Wallace replaced Penny Mordaunt as the Secretary of State for Defence in 2019. He continued in this role under the governments of Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak until his recent resignation. Wallace holds the record for being the longest-serving Conservative politician to serve as defence secretary.

Grant Shapps, the former Energy Secretary, has been announced as Ben Wallace's replacement as Defence Secretary. Shapps expressed his honor at being appointed to the position and paid tribute to Wallace's contributions to UK defence and global security over the past four years. He also expressed his commitment to working with the Armed Forces and continuing the UK's support for Ukraine in their fight against the invasion by Putin's forces.
