BMW tests hydrogen vehicle
【Summary】BMW is trialing its first hydrogen model, the BMW iX5, with almost 100 vehicles. The iX5 has a range of 313 miles and can be filled up in just a few minutes. BMW sees hydrogen as a versatile energy source that can play a key role in the energy transition and climate protection. The company aims to achieve full climate neutrality and reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle by at least 40% by 2030.
BMW is conducting a pilot program with a fleet of nearly 100 hydrogen vehicles. This initiative involves the deployment of the BMW iX5, which has been in development for four years and is now being tested internationally for trial purposes.
The BMW iX5 offers an impressive range of 313 miles. The fuel cell is powered by hydrogen, which is stored in two 700-bar tanks made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). These tanks can be filled up in just three to four minutes, providing a quick and convenient refueling experience.
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, emphasizes the importance of hydrogen as a versatile energy source in the energy transition process and climate protection. He believes that hydrogen is one of the most efficient ways to store and transport renewable energies. Zipse also highlights the significance of hydrogen in accelerating the transformation of the mobility sector, stating that it is the missing piece in achieving emission-free mobility worldwide.
The introduction of the BMW iX5 is part of the company's 'Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign', which aims to achieve full climate neutrality throughout the value chain. As part of this campaign, the BMW Group plans to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle over its full lifecycle by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. This commitment demonstrates BMW's dedication to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable mobility.
