BMW's armored electric vehicle revealed for the Prime Minister

The BMW i7 Protection is an armoured version of the fully electric sedan flagship, designed for dignitaries, presidents, and ministers. It offers bullet and bomb-proof resilience, making it an ideal choice for those seeking both protection and luxury. While it remains uncertain if the vehicle will be included in the local Government fleet, New Zealand already has an armoured Seven in the Crown fleet, which is believed to be a petrol V12 model purchased over two decades ago.

The armoured i7 features bullet-proof glass, protection-spec doors, and armoured steel construction. It is primarily used when New Zealand hosts visiting international VIPs who require a high level of security. The Crown's current VIP cars are due for renewal, and the procurement process is overseen by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The government's preference for electric vehicles has shifted the focus away from conventional internal combustion engines.

BMW New Zealand has not confirmed whether the i7 Protection is being evaluated by the Government, stating that they do not comment on their relationships with the government or security vehicle matters. However, BMW in Munich has announced that the i7 Protection is the first armoured electric sedan offered by a car manufacturer. It is certified to VR9 protection standards, providing security against gunfire and explosive devices.

The vehicles' appearance is similar to regular variants, making them more discreet than post-production converted protection vehicles. They feature a newly engineered Protection Core, with the entire supporting structure built from armoured steel to create a self-supporting protective cell. Additional features include protection-spec doors, armoured underbody and roof, safety glass, and specially developed run-flat tires.

Custom options are available, such as a fresh-air supply system, fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers, and flag poles. The weight of the vehicles has not been disclosed, but upgrades may add up to a tonne to the standard i7. The i7 Protection has the same dual-motor setup as the showroom i7 M70 xDrive, but the extra weight affects its performance, resulting in a slower acceleration time.

BMW offers specialized driver training courses for chauffeurs and a global network of experts who provide service and support specific to the Protection vehicles.
