BMW's latest affordable electric motorcycle production commences.

BMW Motorrad has commenced production of the BMW CE 02, an electric motorcycle designed for commuting. The CE 02 was introduced as a smaller and lower-power alternative to the CE 04 electric motorbike, with a price tag of $7,599, significantly lower than the CE 04's $12,000 price. RideApart reports that BMW is partnering with TVS Motor Company, a well-known player in the global two-wheeler industry, for the production of the CE 02.

TVS Motor Company, founded in India in 1978, is recognized worldwide for its motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds. The CE 02 is being manufactured at TVS's Hosur facility near Chennai, although it is not currently planned for release in the Indian market. Instead, it will first be launched internationally in Europe and North America.

The BMW CE 02 is aimed at attracting a younger and more urban audience. With a top speed of 59 mph (95 km/h), it is suitable for urban and suburban areas but not for highway use. The bike is expected to offer various customization options, including accessories like a removable skateboard that can be attached to the motorcycle to serve as foot platforms when parking far from the rider's destination in areas where motorized vehicles are not allowed.

Similar to Kawasaki's recent urban electric motorcycles, the BMW CE 02 is equipped with a pair of small removable batteries, each with a capacity of just under 2 kWh, providing a total of 3.92 kWh. This allows the bike to achieve a maximum range of 56 miles (90 km). However, the real-world range is expected to be lower when traveling at higher speeds or using the higher-power riding mode due to the bike's 11 kW peak-rated motor.

In other news, BMW Motorrad recently issued a stop sale notice for all its gasoline-powered motorcycles in North America, possibly due to an emissions issue. However, the notice has since been removed. During the stop sale period, the only model available for purchase was the electric CE 04.
