Thousands of festivalgoers at the Burning Man festival in Nevada's desert are currently stranded due to storm flooding. Vehicular access to the festival site has been closed by the organizers in response to the flooding. Many attendees have been trudging through mud, some even resorting to walking barefoot or using plastic bags as makeshift footwear.
Authorities in Nevada are investigating a death that occurred at the festival site. The Pershing County Sheriff's Office has provided limited information about the incident, withholding the identity of the deceased person and the suspected cause of death.
The organizers of Burning Man have reassured participants that the festival is designed to withstand such conditions and have urged attendees to remain calm. They have also arranged for mobile phone trailers to be deployed and temporarily provided internet access overnight. Shuttle buses are being organized to transport people from Gerlach, a nearby town, to Reno.
The gate and airport in and out of Black Rock City, where the festival is held, are currently closed. No driving is allowed except for emergency vehicles. Festivalgoers are advised to conserve food, water, and seek shelter in warm spaces. Updates on the situation are expected to be provided.
According to the US Bureau of Land Management, which oversees the Black Rock Desert, the vehicle gates will remain closed for the remainder of the event. The festival, which started on August 27, was originally scheduled to end on Monday. Officials are hopeful that if weather conditions improve, vehicles will be able to depart by late Monday.
The closure of the festival site and the uncertainty surrounding the situation have occurred just before the scheduled burning of a large wooden effigy, which is a highlight of the annual Burning Man event.
