Calculate the alternative to paying Sadiq Khan's Ulez: buy a new car
【Summary】Sadiq Khan's Ulez scheme has expanded, charging cars £12.50 a day if they don't meet emissions requirements. One in five Londoners plans to sell their car to avoid the charge. The Telegraph has created a calculator to help drivers decide whether to sell their car and buy a new one.
Sadiq Khan's Ulez scheme has recently been expanded from inner London to the boundaries of the M25.
Under this scheme, cars that do not meet the emissions requirements will be charged £12.50 for each day they drive within the designated zone.
According to used car platform Motorway, one in five Londoners plans to sell their car in order to avoid paying the charge.
For those who are considering whether to sell their car and upgrade to a vehicle that is not subject to emissions penalties, the key question is whether they drive enough to justify the investment.
For example, a driver who does the school run in an old diesel car through the Ulez every day would end up paying £62.50 per week, which amounts to an annual cost of £2,000 (assuming a standard 39-week school year).
But the important question is: how long would it take to recover the investment through savings on Ulez fines after purchasing a newer car, let's say for £10,000?
In order to help answer this question, The Telegraph has developed a calculator. All you need to do is input the model of your current car, the desired selling price, the cost of the car you plan to buy, and how often you drive your car into the Ulez zone each day.
