The Cayenne is Porsche's best-selling model, bringing in the money to make limited-run specials possible. The top-spec Turbo variant, which we have driven, is the fastest 4x4 in the world.
At first glance, the Cayenne Turbo may seem expensive, unnecessarily quick, and irrelevant to most buyers. However, a closer look reveals the extraordinary achievements of this car. It offers all the benefits of a full-size 4x4, including a supple ride, elevated seating position, and ample space in the back. Additionally, it is as fast as a 911 Carrera 4S in a straight line and nearly as quick through corners. The Turbo variant also boasts a 185kg weight saving compared to its predecessor, a 31% boost in economy, and stop-start technology. The styling overhaul inside and out is the icing on the cake.
Inside the Cayenne, there have been even bigger changes, with a Panamera-style rising center console and an array of switches and toggles. The build quality is top-notch, with sturdy metal and stitched leather covering most surfaces.
In line with Porsche's Intelligent Performance mantra, the new Cayenne weighs 185kg less than before and features standard stop-start technology on models equipped with the efficient eight-speed Tiptronic auto. This results in a 31% improvement in fuel economy and a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions.
The 4.8-liter twin-turbo engine in the Cayenne Turbo delivers the same 493bhp output as before. With the superb auto transmission, the SUV can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds. The handling of the Cayenne is exceptional, with precise steering and minimal body roll. The Dynamic Chassis control, PASM suspension, and Torque Vectoring Plus contribute to its impressive cornering abilities.
The Range Rover is the main rival to the Cayenne, offering ultimate luxury and comfort. Although it cannot match the Cayenne's performance, the top-of-the-range 510bhp supercharged 5.0-liter V8 still provides a powerful driving experience, especially off-road.
