The all-new Porsche Cayenne has arrived in the UK, boasting a larger and more efficient design. Despite its longer wheelbase, the new model appears smaller due to its taut body and sharper front end.
The Cayenne is Porsche's best-selling vehicle, generating the revenue necessary for limited-run specials like the GT2 RS. The top-spec Turbo version, which we have test-driven, is the fastest 4x4 in the world.
At first glance, the Cayenne Turbo may seem expensive, excessively fast, and irrelevant to most buyers. However, a closer look reveals the extraordinary achievements of Porsche with this car. It offers the benefits of a full-size 4x4, including a comfortable ride, elevated seating position, and ample space in the back. But that's just scratching the surface of the Turbo's capabilities. It can match the speed of a 911 Carrera 4S in a straight line and is nearly as quick in corners, all while weighing 2.1 tonnes. Additionally, the new model is 185kg lighter than its predecessor and boasts a 31% increase in fuel economy, thanks to stop-start technology. The styling updates inside and out are the icing on the cake.
Inside the Cayenne, there have been significant changes, with a Panamera-style rising center console providing a cockpit-like experience. The build quality is exceptional, with sturdy metal and stitched leather throughout.
In line with Porsche's Intelligent Performance mantra, the new Cayenne is 185kg lighter and features standard stop-start technology on models equipped with the eight-speed Tiptronic auto. This results in a 31% improvement in fuel economy and a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions.
The 4.8-liter twin-turbo engine remains a powerhouse, delivering the same 493bhp output as before. With a quick kickdown from the superb auto transmission, the 2.1-tonne SUV can go from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds. The Cayenne's exhaust system emits a muted gargle.
Inside the well-insulated interior, the Cayenne provides a lofty seating position and a composed driving experience at any speed. The precise steering and optional carbon ceramic discs ensure excellent handling and braking performance.
In corners, the Cayenne defies expectations by exhibiting minimal body roll. Porsche's Dynamic Chassis Control, three-mode PASM suspension, and Torque Vectoring Plus work together to maximize grip and allow the Cayenne to corner faster than any competitor. It's like a sports car on stilts!
The Range Rover Supercharged is the Cayenne's main rival, offering ultimate luxury and comfort. While it may not match the Cayenne's performance, the Range Rover excels off-road.
