The all-new Porsche Cayenne has arrived in the UK, boasting a larger and more efficient design compared to its predecessor. Despite the longer wheelbase, the new model appears smaller due to its taut body and sharper front end.

The Cayenne is Porsche's best-selling vehicle, generating the revenue necessary to produce limited-run specials such as the GT2 RS. The top-spec Turbo variant, which we had the opportunity to drive, is the fastest 4x4 in the world.

At first glance, the Cayenne Turbo may seem expensive, unnecessarily quick, and irrelevant to most buyers. However, a closer look reveals the extraordinary achievements of Porsche with this car. It offers all the benefits of a full-size 4x4, including a supple ride, elevated seating position, and ample space in the back. Additionally, the Turbo model is as fast as a 911 Carrera 4S in a straight line and nearly as agile through corners. The weight-saving of 185kg compared to the previous model, along with a 31% boost in fuel economy, further enhance its appeal. Moreover, the styling overhaul inside and out adds to its overall allure.

The interior of the Cayenne has undergone significant changes, with a Panamera-style rising centre console providing a cockpit-like experience. The build quality is impeccable, featuring sturdy metal elements and leather coverings on most surfaces.

Porsche's commitment to Intelligent Performance is evident in the Cayenne, with a weight reduction of 185kg and standard stop-start technology on models equipped with the new eight-speed Tiptronic auto. These improvements result in a 31% increase in fuel economy, achieving 24.6mpg, and a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions, totaling 270g/km.

Under the hood, the updated 4.8-litre twin-turbo engine delivers the same 493bhp as before. The Cayenne Turbo can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds, accompanied by a muted gargle from the quad exhausts.

Behind the wheel, the Cayenne provides a composed and controlled driving experience, making it easy to lose track of speed. The laser-like steering allows for precise maneuvering, and the optional carbon ceramic discs provide exceptional braking performance.

In corners, the Cayenne defies expectations by exhibiting minimal body roll. Porsche's Dynamic Chassis control, three-mode PASM suspension, and Torque Vectoring Plus work together to ensure the Cayenne corners flatter and faster than its rivals. It can be likened to a sports car on stilts.

While the Cayenne Turbo may not match the Range Rover in terms of ultimate luxury and comfort, it outshines its British counterpart in terms of performance. The Range Rover's top-of-the-range 510bhp supercharged 5.0-litre V8 cannot compete with the Cayenne Turbo's outright speed. However, the Range Rover's off-road capabilities remain unbeatable.
