Chinese Battery Companies: The Next Big Threat?

The Biden administration and the European Union have set ambitious goals for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States and Europe. By 2030, the Biden administration aims to have half of all new cars sold in the U.S. be electric, while the European Union plans to mandate that all new cars and vans sold after 2035 emit zero emissions.

While these goals are aimed at decarbonizing the transportation sector and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, they also have implications for China. Currently, companies with close ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) control almost half of the global supply of EV batteries.

This dominance in the EV battery market by Chinese companies raises concerns about potential cyber threats. Similar to how Chinese technology giant Huawei's expansion allowed China to gain access to critical Western telecommunications networks, a rapid embrace of EVs could expose the United States and European nations to similar vulnerabilities.

As the market for EVs continues to grow, it is important for the United States and European countries to consider the potential risks associated with relying heavily on Chinese-controlled EV batteries. Balancing the need for decarbonization with national security concerns will be crucial in shaping the future of the EV industry.

Craig Singleton, a senior China fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a former U.S. diplomat, warns about the potential dangers of unchecked expansion in the EV market and the need for careful consideration of cyber threats.
