Electric ID.7 Tourer station wagon set to rival Volvo in Volkswagen's new direction
【Summary】Volkswagen is set to release the all-electric ID.7 Tourer next year, offering a station wagon option for those who prefer the traditional shape over SUVs. The ID.7 Tourer will provide ample storage space, with 545 liters when five people are inside and 1,714 liters when the seats are folded flat. Performance and range details are yet to be confirmed.
Volvo made headlines earlier this year by announcing its decision to discontinue all of its saloon and estate models in favor of focusing solely on SUVs. However, for those who prefer the classic proportions of a station wagon, Volkswagen has come to the rescue. The company has revealed that it will be releasing the ID.7 Tourer next year, which will offer generous trunk space.
Although the ID.7 Tourer is currently hidden under heavy camouflage in the released images, Volkswagen claims that it will provide 545 liters (19.2 cu ft) of storage space with five passengers on board, and a massive 1,714 liters (60.5 cu ft) when the rear seats are folded flat. While performance and electric range details have not been confirmed yet, we do know that the Tourer will be based on the ID.7 saloon, which boasts an impressive 435 miles of range on a single charge with the larger 86kWh battery.
Volkswagen has utilized a clever camouflage foiling technique that mimics the multi-layer paint of the ID.7 saloon. The covering also features QR codes at the rear, seamlessly blending in, presumably to provide additional information about the upcoming model to curious passers-by.
The news of the VW ID.7 Tourer will surely delight those who desire ample storage space without the bulkiness of an SUV. With many electric vehicle manufacturers sticking to conventional body styles, the elongated ID.7 could be the unique option that convinces potential buyers.
Furthermore, BMW has confirmed that it will be adding an i5 Touring model to its electric lineup, with rumors of a high-performance M-Division variant that could fulfill the dreams of those seeking an all-electric estate car with a fiery performance. This development begs the question of whether Audi will also join the race with an RS6 e-tron, and perhaps even if Volvo will reconsider its decision to abandon one of its most iconic body styles.
