Electric Recon: Embracing the Off-Road Legacy of Jeep Wrangler

Jeep is set to release the highly anticipated off-road EV, the Jeep Recon, which draws inspiration from the iconic Jeep Wrangler. This model will play a crucial role as the American automaker moves towards an electric future.

As part of Stellantis' Dare Forward 2030 strategy, Jeep aims to become an all-electric brand in Europe, with the goal of achieving 50% EV sales in the US by the end of the decade.

Jeep recently unveiled three new all-electric models, namely the Avenger, Recon, and Wagoneer S. While the Avenger, Jeep's first EV, was introduced in Europe earlier this year and received the Car of the Year award, it is not currently available for sale in the US. The Recon and Wagoneer S will be Jeep's first 100% electric vehicles in the US and are expected to go into production next year.

In March, images of the 2024 Recon Moab 4xe, which is likely to be the highest trim level, were leaked from a dealer event in Las Vegas, giving us a sneak peek at what's to come.

The Recon is described as a "rugged and capable fully electric SUV" that takes inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler. It will offer similar features such as removable doors and windows.

Antonella Bruno, Head of Jeep Europe, confirmed that the new electric SUV will be positioned alongside the Wrangler but will have a different market positioning. Bruno stated, "The Recon in Europe will be a white-space car. It's a unique car, very boxy and very capable. It will sit in a lower part of the [market] segment compared to the Wrangler."

According to Autocar, the electric SUV will have nearly 600 hp and a range of around 373 miles. It will be available in the UK market.

Bruno expressed Jeep's ambition to become the leader in 4x4 electrification globally, while also maintaining the brand's heritage of building vehicles designed for any terrain. Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep North America, claimed that the new electric Jeep Recon will have the capability to conquer the challenging Rubicon Trail and still have enough range to return to town for a recharge.

Following the release of the Recon, the next Jeep EV to arrive will be the Wagoneer S, a premium midsize electric SUV. Jeep promises that the electric Wagoneer will be fully loaded both inside and out, boasting 600 hp and a range of up to 400 miles. It is designed to complete a trip from New York City to Toronto on a single charge. The Wagoneer S is expected to be available next year, alongside the Recon.
