Emeya electric sedan debut set for Sept. 7

Lotus is preparing to introduce its first sedan in decades, following the Carlton from the early 1990s. The British performance brand recently released a teaser video showcasing the sleek four-door model, which will be known as the Emeya. Previously referred to as the Envya, the Emeya will be unveiled on September 7th as an all-electric sedan. It will join Lotus' growing lineup of mainstream electric vehicles, which includes the Eletre mid-size SUV and a compact crossover known as the Type 134.

The teaser video provides a glimpse of the Emeya's design, which appears to have a similar shape to the Tesla Model S and draws inspiration from the Eletre. Notable features include twin-element daytime running lights at the front and a rear light strip reminiscent of the Eletre. Spy shots of prototypes also reveal that the Emeya will feature the Eletre's triangular active shutters and may offer cameras instead of traditional side mirrors, although this option might not be available in the U.S. market.

While Lotus has confirmed that the Eletre will be sold in the U.S. in 2024, no information has been provided regarding the availability of the other EVs in the American market. If approved for a U.S. launch, it is likely that the Emeya will also arrive in 2024. The Emeya is expected to be underpinned by the same Electric Premium Architecture platform used for the Eletre, which supports up to 905 hp, 112 kWh of battery capacity, dual-motor all-wheel drive, air suspension, and fast-charging at 350 kW.

Potential competitors for the Emeya include the Audi E-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and high-end variants of the Tesla Model S. Lotus' sister brand, Polestar, is also developing a similar model called the Polestar 5, set to launch next year. The sedan, along with the Eletre and upcoming compact crossover, is being developed by Lotus Technology, the division responsible for non-sports car models. Production of these vehicles will take place at a facility in Wuhan, China, under the supervision of Lotus Technology.

In addition to the Emeya, Lotus has plans to introduce the Type 134 compact crossover in approximately 2025, followed by a new sports car known as the Type 135 around 2026. All future Lotus models will be electric, as the company has confirmed that the current Emira sports car will be the last to feature a gasoline engine.
