Etna eruption affects Catania airport

Flights to and from Catania, a popular tourist destination in eastern Sicily, have been suspended after an eruption from Mount Etna, causing further travel problems for the crisis-stricken Italian airport. The volcano, standing at 3330 meters high, erupted overnight, spewing lava and ash into the air above the Mediterranean island. Although the lava flow has subsided, ash continues to be emitted from one of the craters.

In response to the ash-covered streets, Catania Mayor Enrico Trantino has imposed a ban on motorcycles and bicycles in the city for the next 48 hours. Additionally, he has ordered cars to drive no faster than 30km/h due to the hazardous conditions. The airport has announced that flights will remain suspended until 8pm local time on Monday, causing inconvenience for travelers.

This recent disruption at Catania airport, which receives more arrivals than Palermo, the capital of Sicily, follows a fire incident at a terminal building a month ago. The fire resulted in weeks of travel disruptions for passengers. It is worth noting that the last major eruption of Mount Etna occurred in 1992.
