Etna eruption shuts down Catania airport

An eruption at Mount Etna has caused significant disruption for travellers at Catania airport, one of Sicily's busiest airports. The airport's operator had to cancel at least 45 flights due to the risk posed by falling ash. Flights were suspended until 8pm local time, as stated on the airport's website. Initially, departures and arrivals were halted until 1pm.

Ryanair has warned that flights to and from Catania could face delays, diversions, or cancellations due to the volcanic eruption. Wizz Air has also experienced delays and cancellations, affecting four rotations. Further changes may occur if the volcano continues to erupt. The British Airways flight from London Gatwick Airport to Catania on Monday morning was delayed, and easyJet also experienced delays for some flights from London to Catania.

In response to the eruption, Catania's Mayor Enrico Trantino has prohibited the use of motorcycles and bicycles for the next 48 hours. This measure is in place because several areas are covered with a layer of volcanic ash, which can make roads slippery and increase the risk of accidents.

Standing at 3,324 meters, Mount Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe and has a history of frequent eruptions over the past 500,000 years. This is not the first time Catania airport has been affected by volcanic activity. On May 21, the airport was closed for a day due to an eruption. With around 10 million passengers transiting through the airport last year, it serves as a crucial gateway for the eastern part of Sicily.
