Ex-Top Gear Co-Host Tests the New Mercedes CLE, Is It an Affordable GT?

The Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe was created in response to customer demand for more space and sportier driving dynamics. It replaces the two-door versions of the old C-Class and E-Class, positioning itself between the modern-day C- and E-Class models. Competing with the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, the CLE features a design that combines elements from both the C-Class and E-Class.

Inside, the CLE offers a familiar interior layout with a touchscreen infotainment screen, tablet-like digital dials, and comfortable front seats. It is equipped with various tech features, including TikTok and Angry Birds, and features ambient lighting at night.

Under the hood, the CLE is available with multiple gasoline and diesel units, all featuring mild-hybrid technology for an electric boost. The only transmission option is the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which performs well, especially when paired with paddle shifters on faster models. For those seeking more power, a six-cylinder engine is also available, delivering 375 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The CLE 450, equipped with the six-cylinder engine, was put to the test on the open road by reviewer Rory Reid. Known for his time on Top Gear, Reid shared his thoughts on the build quality, gadgets, design, practicality, and other aspects of the CLE Coupe. To find out his verdict and whether he recommends it as a budget grand tourer or a posh sports ride, watch the embedded video below.
