Ford Transit Custom (2023) review: improved performance and features

The Ford Transit Custom is the UK's favorite van and regularly the best-selling vehicle in the country. As such, the new 2024 Ford Transit Custom is an important vehicle that needs to live up to high standards and be future-proof. The 2024 model is all-new, with a brand-new platform, a stretched wheelbase, and weight savings. These changes result in improved aerodynamics and reduced drag levels. Ford has also ensured that the lower-roof models are comfortably under 2m tall, making them easier to maneuver in car parks.

The interior of the 2024 Ford Transit Custom has seen significant changes. The cabin is smarter, with clever storage solutions and improved practicality. The floor is now totally flat, allowing for three fully grown adults to sit comfortably across the front. The van also features a standard 13-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on every model. However, some functions have been moved to the touchscreen, which may be a downside for some users. Another notable feature is the new tilting steering wheel, which can be angled to hold a tablet or lie flat to hold a laptop.

In terms of safety, the Transit Custom comes with two front airbags as standard, an improvement from the single airbag in many vans. The passenger side airbag is located in the roof, creating space for a deep secondary glovebox. The van also includes various safety systems as standard, such as collision mitigation, intelligent speed limiter, lane keeping assist, and reverse parking sensors. Optional safety features include a system that alerts you if you open your door into oncoming traffic.

While the driving experience of the 2024 Ford Transit Custom may not be as entertaining as its predecessor, it offers lighter and more responsive steering, improved visibility, and a composed ride. The engine lineup remains largely unchanged, with 2.0-liter diesel options ranging from 109bhp to 168bhp. Ford also plans to introduce an all-electric version and a plug-in hybrid model.

In terms of the loading bay, Ford has made some welcome changes to the rear of the Transit Custom. The van offers a new lower step on the side entry point and improved LED lighting. The standout feature is the new Multicab, which features an L-shaped bulkhead with two seats on one side and a section of full-length loading bay on the other. The Transit Custom is available in four different sizes, with two lengths and two heights. The payload capacity ranges from 1,000kg to 1,407kg, and braked towing weights range from 2,000kg to 2,800kg.

The 2024 Ford Transit Custom has been designed with practicality in mind, offering features that cater to the needs of users. With its new design and improvements, it is expected to continue the success of its predecessor in the UK market.
