Honda CR-V - Fuel Efficiency and Cost Analysis

The Honda CR-V e:HEV hybrid is equipped with four-wheel drive, but this feature actually hampers its efficiency due to the extra weight. While it offers a fuel economy figure of 42.8mpg, which is slightly better than the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, it falls behind competitors like the Ford Kuga, Renault Austral, and Toyota RAV4, which offer two-wheel-drive alternatives. As a result, the CR-V has higher emissions and falls into a higher company car tax band, making it more expensive to run.

On the other hand, the e:PHEV plug-in hybrid version of the CR-V is a more favorable choice for company car drivers. It emits only 18g/km of CO2 in WLTP testing and can travel up to 51 miles on a single charge. This places the CR-V comfortably within the eight per cent company car tax band, which is better than the plug-in hybrid versions of the Santa Fe and Sorento. For even greater savings, considering an electric car like the Tesla Model Y would place you in an even lower tax bracket.

If you have a 6.8kW wallbox charger, you can fully recharge the e:PHEV CR-V in just two and a half hours.

Despite the advanced safety features designed to prevent collisions, insuring the CR-V may be more expensive compared to its rivals. The e:HEV hybrid falls into insurance group 34, while the e:PHEV plug-in hybrid is in group 37. This is considerably higher than the RAV4, which starts at group 26, or even the Kuga hybrid at group 20.

According to our data, the CR-V holds its resale value on par with the Santa Fe, Sorento, and Nissan X-Trail, maintaining 54-55% after three years/36,000 miles. However, it falls behind the Renault Austral Techno and Toyota RAV4 2.5 PHEV GR Sport, as they retain nearly 60% of their value.
