Ford Transit Custom (2023) review: improved performance

The Ford Transit Custom is a popular and important vehicle in the UK, consistently being the best-selling model overall. The new 2024 Ford Transit Custom aims to live up to the high standards of its predecessor and be future-proof. With a completely new platform, a longer wheelbase, and weight savings, the 2024 model is all-new from the ground up. These changes result in improved aerodynamics, with reduced drag levels. Additionally, the lower-roof models are comfortably under 2m tall, making it easier to navigate through car parks.

Inside the Ford Transit Custom, the cabin has undergone significant changes. The floor is now completely flat, allowing for three fully grown adults to sit across the front. The redesign also includes clever storage solutions and a standard 13-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, some functions have been moved to the touchscreen, which may not be preferred by everyone. Another notable feature is the tilting steering wheel, which can be adjusted to hold a tablet or lie flat for other uses.

In terms of safety, the Transit Custom comes with two airbags up front, an improvement from the single airbag in many vans. The passenger side airbag is situated in the roof, creating additional space for a deep secondary glovebox. The van also includes several standard safety systems, such as collision mitigation, intelligent speed limiter, lane keeping assist, and speed sign recognition. Optional safety features are also available.

When it comes to driving, the latest version of the Transit Custom offers a lighter and more responsive steering, making it feel smaller on the road. The visibility is excellent, aided by safety features and parking aids. The ride is composed and less stressful. The engine options remain largely unchanged, with the 2.0-litre diesels from the previous version. However, there will be quieter and more modern powertrains available, including an all-electric version and a plug-in hybrid model.

In terms of the loading bay, Ford has made innovative changes to the rear of the Transit Custom. The lower step on the side entry point has been improved for easier access, and the LED lighting has been upgraded. The new Multicab version offers an L-shaped bulkhead, perfect for carrying longer work items or accommodating groups of people.

The Transit Custom comes in four different sizes, offering a range of carrying capacities. The payload capacity is decent, though not the best in class, with a maximum of 1,407kg. Towing weights range from 2,000kg to 2,800kg.

Overall, the 2024 Ford Transit Custom has been designed with practicality in mind and offers several standout features. With its impressive updates and upcoming models, it is likely to continue its success in the UK market.
