Ford Transit Custom Nugget revealed
【Summary】Ford has unveiled the all-new Transit Custom Nugget, a campervan built in collaboration with Westfalia. The redesign includes a more refined interior with modular cabin layout, sleeker design, and high-tech features. The Nugget will be available with diesel or plug-in hybrid powertrains, offering a car-like driving experience and improved off-road capabilities. The diesel version will be available in Autumn 2023, while the plug-in hybrid will follow a year later.
Ford has introduced the new Transit Custom Nugget, a campervan built in collaboration with Westfalia, a German campervan specialist. The campervan features a redesigned interior that is modular and based on campers' needs. The new layout includes a drawer fridge, an induction hob, and a sink with hot water as a standard feature. The cabinets now have a soft-close feature to reduce noise. This new layout provides 20% more countertop space.
The exterior of the Transit Custom Nugget has also been updated with a sleeker design. It has thinner headlights and a new grille with a light bar running across the top, giving it a more futuristic look. The rear of the campervan features smaller tail lights compared to the previous model.
The Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be available with a plug-in hybrid option, staying competitive with its rival, the Volkswagen California. The front seats can swivel around to face the rear, and there is a second row of seats that allows for a total of five occupants when on the move.
The cabin of the Transit Custom Nugget features two double bed spaces. One bed is set up by folding down the rear seating area, while the other is accessible by popping up the Dormer roof. The roof section has a foldable mattress to increase headroom over the kitchen area when needed. An optional solar panel on the roof can help charge the battery when off-grid.
In addition to the camping features, the Transit Custom Nugget also includes high-tech features such as a 5G modem for WiFi access and a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen. The touchscreen controls ambient lighting, onboard heating, and provides information on water and battery levels.
The Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be available with different powertrain options. The diesel version will have a 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbocharged engine with 168bhp and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It will be available in front or all-wheel drive. The campervan will also have a plug-in hybrid option with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery. Range and performance details for the plug-in hybrid version are yet to be confirmed.
Ford has updated the Transit Custom's chassis with more sophisticated independent rear suspension, providing a more car-like driving experience. The campervan will also have driver assistance tech including active cruise control and a 360-degree camera for better visibility when parking.
The diesel version of the Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be available for sale in Autumn 2023, with deliveries expected in spring 2024. The plug-in hybrid version will be released a year later. Pricing for the campervan has not been announced yet, but the entry-level diesel models are expected to start from over £60,000.
