Ford unveils latest campervan model

The all-new Transit Custom Nugget campervan, built in collaboration between Ford and German campervan specialist Westfalia, is based on the recently revealed Transit Custom. It features a sophisticated independent rear suspension system, offering a more car-like driving experience and the option of all-wheel drive for adventurous off-road conditions. The dash is shared with the new Transit Custom van, including Ford's new 13-inch SYNC 4 infotainment system and the latest driver assistance technology.

In addition to the diesel option, Ford will also offer the Nugget campervan with a plug-in hybrid system. This model combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and 11.8kWh battery pack, producing a total power output of 228bhp. Details on efficiency, all-electric range, and performance figures are yet to be confirmed.

The Nugget campervan, equipped with Ford's EcoBlue diesel engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, is scheduled for first deliveries in Spring 2024. The engine produces 168bhp and is available with both front and all-wheel drive options.

The interior of the Nugget campervan has been carefully designed by manufacturing partner Westfalia to meet the needs of customers based on decades of experience. The central space within the cabin is modular, serving as cooking, seating, and sleeping areas. It allows for the setup of double beds while retaining the ability to move around the cabin.

The kitchen features a new L-shaped layout with an integrated drawer fridge, induction hob, and sink. It also includes a hot water connection as standard. The new layout provides 20% more worktop space, and the cabinets now have damped closing mechanisms to reduce rattles during travel.

The front driver and passenger seats can rotate 180 degrees when parked, and the second row accommodates three passengers, allowing a total of five people to travel. The tilting Dormer roof has a self-folding fabric section, and the end piece of the mattress above the kitchen section can be flipped up to improve headroom. There is also an optional solar roof that charges the on-board battery and provides off-grid electricity without a generator.

The Nugget campervan offers hi-tech connectivity features, including a 5G modem for remote WiFi. It also includes a seven-inch touchscreen for controlling the on-board mood lighting, cabin heating, water, and battery levels.

Pricing and specifications for the Nugget campervan are yet to be confirmed. However, it will be available to order from Ford showrooms in Autumn of this year, with first deliveries expected in Spring 2024. Plug-in hybrid models will be introduced within the following 12 months.
