Russian president Vladimir Putin chose not to address a mysterious plane crash during his speech at a BRICS summit. The crash is believed to have killed Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of Wagner, a private military company. According to officials cited by Russia's state news agency Tass, all 10 people on board the plane, including three crew members and seven passengers, died in the crash. However, Putin remained silent on the incident and instead congratulated South African president Cyril Ramaphosa on the announcement that six countries would be joining the economic alliance next year. This address came after Putin attended a concert celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's Second World War victory, despite news of the explosion breaking earlier in the day.
Flight attendant Kristina Raspopova, the only woman on the plane when it crashed, had informed her family that the flight was delayed due to short-term and incomprehensible repairs. There have been suggestions that a bomb in a wine crate may have caused the explosion, as stated by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. He added, "That's a kind of ironic end for Putin's former caterer."
A relative of Raspopova revealed that she was in Moscow and planning to fly out within the next few days. The aircraft was undergoing maintenance or urgent repairs, and they were waiting for the flight. The relative also mentioned that the flight was domestic, and they were waiting for a call to take off.
Wagner fighters, a mercenary group, have warned of revenge following Prigozhin's death. It is believed that Putin is attempting to dismantle the organization after it rebelled against his rule in June during a day-long coup. In a video, masked men from the group stated, "There's a lot of talk right now about what the Wagner Group will do. We can tell you one thing, we are getting started, get ready for us." Supporters of the group have been seen mourning and leaving wreaths and flowers at a memorial for the leader.
The seven passengers on the crashed plane were identified as Yevgeny Prigozhin, Dmitry Utkin, Sergei Propustin, Yevgeny Makaryan, Alexander Totmin, Valery Chekalov, and Nikolai Matuseyev. The crew members were Captain Alexei Levshin, co-pilot Rustam Karimov, and flight attendant Kristina Raspopova.
