Genesis Receives Trio of IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards for GV60, GV70, and GV80
【Summary】Genesis has received three IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards for their GV60, GV70, and GV80 SUVs. While there are areas for improvement, all three vehicles performed well in crashworthiness evaluations. They feature standard safety features like airbags, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. The GV60, the brand's first electric vehicle, scored lower in ease of use for child seat anchors. The GV70 received an advanced rating for front crash prevention.
If a vehicle is awarded the Top Safety Pick+ accolade by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), it means that the vehicle is as safe as it can be. Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai, recently received three such awards for their sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
However, it's important to note that there is some room for error with the Top Safety Pick+ accolade. The GV60, Genesis' first-ever electric vehicle, scored acceptable for the ease of use of the child seat anchors. The GV70, which is available with both internal combustion and electric propulsion, was rated advanced instead of superior for both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. The larger GV80 earned acceptable ratings for the headlights and child seat anchors. Despite these areas for improvement, all three vehicles performed well in crashworthiness evaluations.
Genesis vehicles are known for their safety features. The GV crossovers mentioned above come equipped with at least eight standard airbags, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is even programmed to detect cyclists and pedestrians.
The GV60, which is twinned with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, is currently available in limited numbers at select retailers in 23 states. The 2024 model starts at $60,550 for the Advanced version and $69,550 for the Performance AWD. However, the Performance AWD has limited range, offering only 235 miles on the combined test cycle, while the Advanced AWD fares slightly better with 248 miles.
The US-spec GV70 and Electrified GV70 for the 2024 model year are manufactured at HMMA (Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama). These SUVs are available with either a 2.5-liter turbo, 3.5-liter turbo, or all-electric powertrain, with prices starting at $44,900.
The GV70 shares the Hyundai-Kia M3 platform with the GV80, which is Genesis' largest utility vehicle. In February 2021, professional golfer Tiger Woods was involved in a serious crash with a GV80. Despite the vehicle rolling multiple times, Tiger survived with injuries to his leg and ankle. The safety of the GV80 likely played a significant role in protecting him during the accident.
