Lexus RZ450e: Embracing the Electric Revolution

Lexus and its parent company Toyota have been pioneers in the hybrid engine market, but have been slower to adopt electric vehicles (EVs). However, they have now released the RZ450e, their first all-electric car. James Fisher had the opportunity to test drive it.

The car market has seen significant changes in recent years, particularly with the rise of electrification. It's hard to believe that the first hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, was released in 1997. Shortly after that, Lexus joined the hybrid market with the RX400h and RX450h models.

It's worth noting that Lexus has been at the forefront of hybrid technology for over 15 years, even when it wasn't fashionable or urgent in the context of climate change. However, it's surprising that it took them so long to create an all-electric vehicle like the RZ450e.

Interestingly, another long-standing institution that has been ahead of the curve in addressing climate change is the Glastonbury Festival. It seemed fitting to test the RZ in this setting and see if these two climate-conscious brands could learn from each other.

Both Lexus and Glastonbury had something else in common – James Fisher. He had never been to Glastonbury before, nor had he ever driven an all-electric car. It was a weekend of firsts for him.

When Fisher first saw the RZ, he was pleasantly surprised. Unlike many modern cars that try to look futuristic, the RZ retains its composure and looks like a traditional car. The front end is particularly dynamic, and the absence of a combustion engine in the engine bay improves visibility.

The interior of the RZ is futuristic but not overly so. The infotainment system features a large screen, and the materials and seats are of high quality. The car even offers a fun welcome when you enter.

The boot size is decent, and the back seats are spacious. The panoramic glass roof adds to the overall experience. However, Fisher encountered some challenges when driving the car due to its advanced safety features. The car constantly pings and intervenes in driving situations, which can be unsettling and make the driver feel less in control.

Despite these challenges, Fisher found the RZ to be a fun car to drive. It offers impressive acceleration and handles sharply, thanks to the low center of gravity and advanced suspension. On the motorway, the car is smooth, quiet, and comfortable.

The biggest challenge for EVs like the RZ is convincing people that they are not significantly different from traditional cars. However, after just five minutes of driving the RZ, Fisher forgot he was driving an EV. The range is around 230 miles, and recharging takes about 20 minutes to reach 80% capacity.

After spending five days at Glastonbury, Fisher was pleased to know that he was contributing to a net-zero festival and that the car's battery charge had not depleted despite being parked in the sun. The RZ performed well in traffic, providing a comfortable experience for both the driver and passengers.

While there are some issues with the RZ, such as the range and overbearing safety features, these are expected to improve over time. Overall, the RZ is a great entry point for anyone considering an EV, especially since new cars will have to be electric starting in 2030.

Price: Starting from £64,500
