【Summary】GM plans to cut 200 engineering positions but assures affected employees they can apply for other roles. This move is part of a strategy to reduce design and engineering costs and simplify manufacturing processes.
General Motors (GM) is planning to cut around 200 engineering positions, but the affected employees will have the opportunity to transition to other roles within the company. According to a GM spokesperson, this move is part of the automaker's efforts to realign its engineering resources with its growth strategy. Over the next few months, a small number of engineers will be asked to move to different departments, and GM will support them by allowing them to apply for open positions.
During GM's second-quarter earnings call in July, CEO Mary Barra announced the launch of a new strategy called "Winning with Simplicity." The goal of this strategy is to reduce design and engineering costs and streamline vehicle orders and manufacturing processes. As part of this plan, GM aims to cut the number of trim levels in half. By doing so, the company hopes to simplify marketing, engineering, and manufacturing tasks, while still providing customers with the best features they desire.
