GM introduces affordable Baojun Cloud EV in China

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has introduced the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback to the market. Priced at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K), the five-seater compact EV comes in four versions, ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K).

SGMW, a joint venture between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, is known for selling vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names. In 2020, the company launched the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, which quickly surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region. The Mini EV has since seen various iterations, including a convertible version and the Wuling Air EV, the automaker's first international EV.

Building on the success of the Mini EV, SGMW has released several new all-electric vehicles, including the Baojun Yep, a mini Ford Bronco lookalike, which has generated excitement in China's market. Additionally, the joint venture recently launched the sub-$10,000 Wuling Bingo, which recorded an impressive 16,383 deliveries in its first month.

The Baojun Cloud EV is expected to compete with the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3 in the Chinese market. With dimensions of 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,652 mm tall, the Baojun Cloud is slightly larger than the BYD Dolphin. It offers two battery options, 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh, providing cruising ranges of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively.

Inside the Baojun Cloud, drivers will find an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. The vehicle also features LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit, making it the first to have this technology.

In response to China's competitive EV market, Volkswagen recently reduced prices on its ID.3 electric car. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a 300% increase in ID.3 sales last month, reaching 7,378 units.
