GM introduces affordable Baojun Cloud EV in China

GM's joint venture, SGMW, has launched the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback in China. The starting price for the vehicle is 95,800 yuan ($13.2K). SGMW is a joint venture between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, and it sells vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names.

In 2020, SGMW introduced the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, an affordable microcar priced at around $10,000. Surprisingly, the Mini EV outsold Tesla's Model 3 in the region within just one year of its launch. The success of the Mini EV led to the development of several variations, including a convertible version and the Wuling Air EV (also known as the MG Comet in India), which marked the automaker's first international EV.

Building on the Mini's success, SGMW has released several new all-electric vehicles, including the Baojun Yep, which resembles a mini Ford Bronco and has generated significant excitement in China's market. Additionally, SGMW launched the Wuling Bingo, priced below $10,000, in March. In its first month on the market, the Wuling Bingo achieved an impressive 16,383 deliveries. This year, the joint venture introduced its second EV under the brand, the Baojun Yunduo (Cloud) EV.

GM-SAIC-Wuling officially listed the Baojun Yunduo (Cloud) on the Chinese market. The electric hatchback is available in four versions (360 Plus, 360 Pro, 460 Pro, and 460 Max) with prices ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K). Measuring 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,652 mm tall, the Baojun Cloud EV is expected to compete with the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3. It is slightly larger than the BYD Dolphin but offers similar features.

The Baojun Cloud EV is offered with two different battery options: 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh. The 37.9 kWh battery provides a cruising range of 360 km (223 mi), while the 50.6 kWh battery extends the range to 460 km (285 mi). Inside the vehicle, there is an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. The Baojun Cloud EV also features LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit, making it the first model to have this technology.

In response to the competitive EV market in China, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. The move has been successful so far, with SAIC-VW reporting a 300% increase in ID.3 sales last month, reaching 7,378 units.
