GM launches affordable Baojun Cloud EV in China

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has introduced the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback, priced at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K). SGMW is a partnership between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, and it sells vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brands.

In 2020, SGMW launched the Wuling Hongguag Mini EV, a highly affordable microcar with a starting price of around $10,000. Within a year, the Mini EV surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region. Since then, the electric microcar has seen various iterations, including a convertible version and the Wuling Air EV, also known as the MG Comet in India, which is SGMW's first international EV.

Building on the success of the Mini EV, SGMW has introduced several new all-electric vehicles, including the Baojun Yep, which resembles a mini Ford Bronco and has become one of the most anticipated cars in China's market. Additionally, the joint venture launched the Wuling Bingo, priced below $10,000, which achieved an impressive 16,383 deliveries in its first month on the market.

SGMW recently launched the Baojun Yunduo, also known as the Baojun Cloud, in China. The electric hatchback is available in four versions and starts at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K). With dimensions of 4,295 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height, the Baojun Cloud is expected to compete against the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.

The Baojun Cloud offers two battery options, with a range of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively. Inside the vehicle, there is an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. It also features LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit, making it the first model to include this technology.

In response to China's competitive EV market, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a sales increase of over 300% last month, selling 7,378 units of the ID.3.
