GM unveils affordable Baojun Cloud EV in China

General Motors' joint venture, SGMW, has introduced the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback in China. Priced at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K), the five-seater compact EV is available in four versions ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K). SGMW is a joint venture between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, and it sells vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names.

In 2020, SGMW launched the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, a highly affordable microcar that quickly became popular in the Chinese market. Within a year, the Mini EV outsold Tesla's Model 3 in the region. The success of the Mini EV led to the introduction of several variations, including a convertible version and the Wuling Air EV, the automaker's first international EV, also known as the MG Comet in India.

Building on the Mini's success, SGMW has released several new all-electric vehicles, including the Baojun Yep, which resembles a mini Ford Bronco. Another recent launch is the sub-$10,000 Wuling Bingo, which achieved impressive sales of 16,383 units in its first month on the market.

The Baojun Cloud EV, with dimensions of 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,652 mm tall, is expected to compete with the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3. It is slightly larger than the BYD Dolphin, which measures 4,125 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall.

The Baojun Cloud EV offers two battery options: 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh, providing a cruising range of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively. The interior features an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and either a 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch central control screen. It is also the first model to feature LingOS 2.0 ecological cockpit.

In an effort to stay competitive in China's EV market, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. This move has been successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a 300% increase in ID.3 sales last month, reaching 7,378 units.
