Honda Civics Front Wheels Turn Recall

Honda has issued a recall for 176,410 Civics from the 2022-2024 model years due to a manufacturing error in the steering rack. This error has the potential to cause damage to the tires or lower suspension arms.

The issue was first brought to Honda's attention in July when its supplier, Hitachi Astemo Americas, Inc., alerted them to a possible manufacturing defect. After investigating the issue in September, Honda determined that there could be a safety impact as a result of this problem.

The power steering racks in these vehicles were assembled with an incorrect stroke length, allowing the front wheels to turn too much and potentially cause damage. If the wheel turns too far, it could damage the tire or the lower suspension arm, both of which are undesirable scenarios.

If the tire is damaged, it could puncture and increase the risk of a crash. Similarly, if the Civic is equipped with snow chains and the steering rack damages the tie rod end, it could affect the car's handling and increase the likelihood of an accident.

This recall may be particularly inconvenient for owners as the affected vehicles have previously undergone a service repair. The details of the previous repair are not specified in Honda's recall report, but the Civic was previously investigated for "sticky" steering in March. However, that issue has only resulted in a regulatory investigation and has not led to a recall.

Starting on December 4, Honda will reach out to owners of the affected four and five-door Civics. They will be asked to bring their vehicle to a nearby Honda dealer for inspection, and the electric power steering rack will be replaced if necessary.
