MotoGP's Behind-the-Scenes Unveiled

The Australian MotoGP is an event that I have been attending for over a decade now. It is held at Phillip Island, which is considered one of the best tracks in the world. While Formula 1 is undoubtedly impressive, there is a raw beauty to Phillip Island and the experience of witnessing motorbike racing at its pinnacle.

The atmosphere at the MotoGP is electric, with hardcore motorcycle fans descending upon the island from far and wide. These passionate enthusiasts have traveled by various means, including two wheels, four wheels, by sea, and even by chopper. Many of them take a week off to make this journey, and for them, MotoGP at Phillip Island is as much about the journey as it is about the weekend at the track.

This year, I had the opportunity to assist with a variety of events for Honda, which made it a Honda-heavy experience for me. One of the highlights was hosting the Honda Champions Dinner at the Phillip Island winery. This dinner is no ordinary affair, as Honda brings together their top talent to speak on stage throughout the three-course meal. It was an organized chaos, with riders arriving late and keeping us on our toes.

If you don't want to spend a fortune on a MotoGP full weekend corporate suite, the Honda Champions Dinner is the place to be. For around $250, attendees have full access to the riders, including photo opportunities, autographs, and dinner. During the on-stage chats, we were able to bring out a different side of these superstars, discovering that many of them had never eaten a meat pie.

Saturday was sprint race day, and I was attending with Honda for the first time. MotoGP is the biggest event of the year for many manufacturers, and a lot of planning and investment goes into creating the perfect corporate suite experience. Honda's set up was impressive, with close proximity parking, a prime location with a view of the race track, and a moto viewing courtyard with chairs and waiters.

During the weekend, I had the opportunity to catch up with former world champions Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan, as well as TV host Grant Denyer. I also had a behind-the-scenes look at the MotoGP tires with Michelin. It was fascinating to learn about the asymmetrical compound front tire and how it is specifically made for the Phillip Island circuit.

The highlight of the weekend was the grid walk, where I had the privilege of being up close to the riders just moments before the race. It was an incredible experience to feel the energy and tension as the championship battle reached its peak. Unfortunately, Sunday's weather was treacherous, with high winds and rain, resulting in the cancellation of the MotoGP sprint race. Despite the conditions, Moto3 and Moto2 races were held, and I had the chance to catch up with Troy Herfoss and his daughter.

Overall, the Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island was an unforgettable experience. The combination of thrilling races, passionate fans, and the stunning location make it a must-attend event for any motorsport enthusiast.

Disclosure: I am a Honda motorcycle brand ambassador, but I appreciate that quality knows no logo and I love all moto children.
