Honda CR-V - Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Impact

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】The Honda CR-V e:HEV hybrid has lower fuel efficiency and higher emissions compared to its two-wheel-drive rivals, resulting in higher running costs. However, the e:PHEV plug-in hybrid offers better mileage and lower CO2 emissions, making it a more cost-effective choice. Insurance costs for the CR-V are higher than its competitors, and its depreciation rate is slightly lower than some other models.

Honda CR-V - Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Impact

The Honda CR-V e:HEV hybrid's four-wheel drive system weighs it down, reducing its efficiency compared to rivals with two-wheel-drive alternatives. Its official economy figure is 42.8mpg, slightly better than the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento but lower than the Ford Kuga, Renault Austral, and Toyota RAV4.

As a result, the CR-V has higher emissions and falls into a higher company car tax band compared to the aforementioned rivals, making it more expensive to run. However, the e:PHEV plug-in hybrid version is a better option for company car drivers. It emits just 18g/km of CO2 in WLTP testing and can travel up to 51 miles on a single charge.

This places the CR-V within the eight per cent company car tax band, which is more favorable than the Santa Fe and Sorento plug-in hybrids. For even greater savings, electric cars like the Tesla Model Y fall into an even lower tax bracket.

If you have a 6.8kW wallbox charger, you can fully recharge the e:PHEV CR-V in two and a half hours.

The CR-V may cost more to insure than its rivals, despite its advanced safety features. The e:HEV hybrid falls into insurance group 34, while the e:PHEV plug-in hybrid is in group 37. In comparison, the RAV4 starts in group 26, and the Kuga hybrid is in just group 20.

When it comes to depreciation, the CR-V's resale value is on par with the Santa Fe, Sorento, and Nissan X-Trail, maintaining 54-55% after three years/36,000 miles. However, it falls behind the Renault Austral Techno and Toyota RAV4 2.5 PHEV GR Sport, which maintain nearly 60% of their value.
