Honda CR-V e:PHEV review - electrifying efficiency

The sixth generation of the Honda CR-V offers everything you would expect from the Japanese carmaker. It retains its dependable charm, which has made it a popular choice in the United States. While the conservative design lines may not be groundbreaking, the CR-V is available with a reliable hybrid setup similar to the Honda Civic. However, it is the plug-in CR-V e:PHEV that stands out as the most promising option.

With volatile fuel prices and a struggling economy, many people are looking for value for money when it comes to their vehicles. The CR-V e:PHEV offers the promise of 51 miles of electric-only driving, making it suitable for short trips to the town center or for a quiet school run.

The exterior design of the new Honda CR-V is not revolutionary, but it is a standard and fairly typical SUV shape. It is slightly wider and longer than its predecessor, with an extended wheelbase. All models come with stylish 18-inch alloys that enhance the overall look of the car. Despite its size, the CR-V e:PHEV manages to avoid feeling bulky.

The front end of the CR-V features design elements seen in other new Honda models, including LED headlights. The interior is practical and continues the successful trim themes of the latest Honda Civic. The CR-V is well-appointed, and the build quality is evident in every detail.

The latest CR-V is available in two hybrid versions, as well as the e:PHEV plug-in model. The e:PHEV comes with a 17.7kWh battery and offers electric-only driving at the start, with a range of up to 51 miles. There is a dedicated button to choose electric mode, but it depends on the available charge. The e:PHEV manages the power dynamically between the petrol engine and the battery, resulting in a quiet and surprisingly agile performance in urban areas. On the motorway, the petrol-powered part of the package requires more effort to achieve optimal performance. However, the CR-V handles corners well, with minimal roll for a vehicle of its size.

In terms of technology, the CR-V e:PHEV offers enough features without being overwhelming. The 10.2-inch TFT screen in front of the steering wheel is well-designed, although some of the driver safety alerts and graphics can be annoying. The blindspot camera on the central touchscreen can also be distracting when it flashes into action during turns. However, the CR-V e:PHEV includes Honda's Digital Key, allowing key operations through a mobile app.

The interior of the CR-V e:PHEV features LED lighting in common areas, creating a pleasant ambiance. Honda has struck a good balance between incorporating technology and retaining physical controls for climate settings. Overall, the CR-V e:PHEV is a versatile SUV that is suitable for both long journeys and short trips.

The main drawback of the PHEV Honda CR-V is its high price. While it offers an impressive list of features and excellent build quality, many potential buyers may opt for the cheaper hybrid option or consider alternatives like the Toyota bZ4X. However, for existing CR-V owners who want to upgrade and have the financial means to do so, the smooth and comfortable performance of the CR-V will likely be appealing.

In conclusion, the plug-in version of the Honda CR-V is a successful reworking of the SUV. It may be physically large and come with a higher price tag, but it delivers on most fronts.
