Honda has joined other major automotive manufacturers by unveiling its first electric bicycle, the Honda e-MTB Concept, at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. Unlike some e-bike concepts, Honda's design is realistic and could potentially reach production. The e-bike utilizes an existing Brose mid-drive motor, allowing Honda to focus on the bike's appearance and structural design. It features a SRAM Eagle AXS drivetrain, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, Fox suspension, a RockShox Reverb dropper seat post, DT Swiss XM 1700 wheels, and Maxxis Minion DHF tires.
The goal for Honda was to create a product that combines the experiences of motorcycles and bicycles, specifically designed for mountainous terrain. The company stated that the Honda e-MTB Concept expands the field of mobility in nature and offers a new riding experience that combines the fun of motorcycles and mountain biking. It is being developed to enable anyone to enjoy riding mountainous trails more freely.
Honda is not the first automaker or motorcycle manufacturer to explore electric bicycles as a way to expand their brand. Companies like Harley-Davidson, Porsche, Peugeot, GM, HUMMER, and Jeep have also ventured into the e-bike market. As the e-bike market continues to grow, more automakers are recognizing its potential as a lucrative way to expand their market and attract more customers to their transportation ecosystem.
